Skilled nursing care is health care provided when a person needs professional nursing staff (registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN) to manage, observe, and evaluate ongoing care.

It is based on the fact that the intermittent professional services can be extended to a client in their home for the purpose of restoring and preserving maximal level of function and wellbeing. These services are rendered instead of hospitalization, confinement in a complete care facility, or remote services outside of the home.

How do I know if I need Skilled Nursing Services?

In order to be classified as skilled nursing services, the Agency for Health Care Administration ACHA, requires that services be ordered by a physician and have a basis of complexity for the care such as, intravenous or intramuscular injections or insertion of catheters either periodically or on a daily basis.

In some cases, the condition of the patient which would ordinarily be considered unskilled can be considered as a skilled nursing service. This would occur when the patient’s condition is such that the service can only be safely and effectively provided by skilled nursing care. In that type of a situation, the patient receives both skilled and unskilled care services.

A skilled nursing service is a service that must be provided by a registered nurse, or a licensed practical (vocational) nurse (under the supervision of a registered nurse), to be safe and effective and it must be ordered by a physician. The determination is based on both the inherent complexity of the service, as well as, the condition of the patient along with the accepted standards of medical and nursing practice.

Skilled nursing services include:

  • Wound care
  • Intravenous therapy
  • Patient education, i.e., Diabetes, COPD, etc.
  • Catheterization and maintenance
  • Tube feedings and irrigations
  • Coordination of services and referral of services
